Bio
Aneesh’s research examines the relationship between archeological complex societies, paleoenvironments, and the landscapes they inhabited. Before joining the PhD program in Anthropology at UPenn, he graduated from Ashoka University, India, with a B.A. (Hons. with Research) in History. His earlier work used remote sensing and field exploration to study the settlement patterns in the fluvial landscapes of northern India, tracing how past communities used resources and made meaning of spaces. He has been affiliated with the Centre for Interdisciplinary Archaeological Research at Ashoka University, Ghent University, the University of Pisa, and the Deccan Heritage Foundation. He is currently interested in the ritual landscapes of historic South India, examining how local economies and landforms shaped the emergence of sacred spaces and their surrounding material cultures.
Research Interests
Archaeological landscapes, paleoenvironments and Holocene climate, remote sensing and geoarchaeology, archaeological theory, and historic ecology and subsistence in South Asia.
