"The 10th Arabic Papyrology Webclass: Documents from Edfu"
Speaker: Andreas Kaplony, Ludwig-Maximilians-University of Munich
During the Tell Edfu excavations by Henri Henne et Fernand Bisson de la Roque (1921–1924), in addition to the famous papyrus codex (d. 276/881) of al-Djāmiʿ fī al-ḥadīth by ʿAbd Allāh b. Wahb b. Muslim, a good number of Arabic papyrus letters and agreements (8th–10th c.) were found. Currently, these documents are kept in the Louvre in Paris and in the Institut français d'archéologie orientale (IFAO) in Cairo.
In this webclass, we will read unpublished documents from the IFAO collection and try to use them to understand the history of Edfu as seen not through literary sources, but through documents.
This is an on-line webclass. We will read unpublished documents. A scan of the document to be discussed will be sent to you in advance. Estimated time for preparation: 1-2 hours/week. Communication will be in English.
