Chantel White and Jason Herrmann - (Center for the Analysis of Archaeological Materials, University of Pennsylvania) - “Amplifying Voices from the Past through Archaeological Science"

Monday, April 15, 2024 - 12:00pm

Penn Museum 345

Archaeologists from the Center for the Analysis of Archaeological Materials (CAAM) are using scientific techniques to engage with historically unrecognized voices in archaeology and cultural heritage. In this presentation, Dr. Chantel White will present her work on culinary agency at the Nathaniel Russell kitchen house in Charleston, SC, and will demonstrate how archaeobotany is being used to reconstruct the diets of enslaved people in the 19th century. Dr. Jason Herrmann will show how coursework and student projects in CAAM’s Academically-Based Community Service courses in digital archaeology are helping to advance efforts to restore and preserve African American mortuary spaces led by cemetery stewards and local cultural heritage organizations.
