Changing Perceptions of the African Diaspora and Archaeology in the Caribbean

The talk will address current research issues regarding African Diaspora research in the Caribbean including perceptions of island residents to this research. Local, regional and international attitudes towards heritage preservation are framed through this discussion. Over the course of 17 years research in the region the speaker has witnessed a wholesale change in identity formation and island heritage due to a confluence of factors. A primary case study will the Dutch island of St Eustatius.
