Austin is a PhD student in cultural anthropology whose work is situated within environmental anthropology, science and technology studies, and political ecology. His research interests center around questions of abandonment and repair at ecologically impaired sites in the Schuylkill River Watershed subject to ecological restoration. Before coming to Penn he conducted research projects on ecosystem restoration in acid mine-impaired headwater streams in southeast Ohio and remediation of harmful algal blooms in Lake Erie.
